Why resistance bands are a home workout game changer!

Home workouts are becoming increasingly popular, following the pandemic and working from home. You don’t need an entire home gym to be productive though – this is why resistance bands are a must-have for exercising in your house!

Resistance bands are used to make your muscles work harder during your workout, forcing them to maintain stability. They can also engage multiple muscles simultaneously. These are a great addition for general strength, conditioning, injury prevention and warm-ups. 

If you’re starting out with resistance bands, remember the rule that the thicker the band, the harder you will have to work out. So, it is recommended that newbies start with a thin band, then work their way up.

A couple of our favourite exercises to get you going include:

Lateral walk

First, wrap the band around your thighs, then sink into a half squat position. Lift your right foot and take a step to the right, followed by the left foot. Reverse the movement to return to the starting position.

Abduction

Wrap the band around your thighs, then lower into a half squat position. Without moving your feet, press the right knee a few inches out to the right, then return to the start and repeat on the left. 

Deadlift

Stand with your feet hip distance apart, with the resistance band wrapped around the arches. Hold the band with both hands, arms straight, and press your hips backwards into a hinge position. Drive down through the heels to stand up straight, squeezing the glutes at the top.

Hamstring walkout

Lie down on your back with the resistance band wrapped around your thighs; bend your knees, plant your feet and lift your hips into the air to form a straight line with your body from shoulders to knees. 

Keep your hips still, then lift the left foot and step it a couple of inches forward, followed by the right. Repeat until your legs are fully extended, then reverse in small steps to the start.

Plank to bear

Start in a plank position with the band wrapped around your feet. Lift your right foot and bring it forward so the knee is under your hips and elevated a few inches off the floor. Repeat on the opposite side, pause, then return to start.
